Protean was formed in 2015 by Phil Chater after a successful career driving business performance in large global organisations.
Phil’s passion for excellence began as a teenager, when he was first exposed to the principles of Total Quality Management. Obtaining a Master’s degree in Manufacturing Engineering and Management whilst sponsored by Jaguar Cars, he helped secure several excellence awards for their manufacturing facilities.
Over the following 20 years he drove business performance improvement in leadership roles at several blue-chip manufacturing businesses throughout the automotive sector.

Recognising that the tools and skills deployed in the highly competitive automotive sector were transferrable to other industries, Phil moved into the telecommunications sector. Working for a major global organisation, he drove excellence in programme management, product and software development, as well as manufacturing.
As the business moved from a manufacturing to service model, Phil orchestrated the change, defining and implementing new IT systems and ways of working, optimising organisational structures and building new teams.
